Welcome to Qwest DSL

Welcome to me that is. For the past three years, I’ve been using cable for the internet. I was totally satisfied with it, but saving money was more important. Qwest sent me the DSL kit a few days ago and today I decided to set everything up. With the DSL filters applied to the telephone line and the newly installed DISH receiver, setting up the modem was a snap. I did everything manually instead of using Qwest’s QuickConnect. The lady who helped me get my username and password was very helpful.

The biggest problem is the Actiontec GT701-WG DSL modem/wireless router that Qwest provides just plain sucks. I almost always connect wirelessly and the modem’s signal strength is very, very weak. I get a measly one bar out of five, even after I set up the modem two rooms away, instead of upstairs. Using cable and my Belkin access point upstairs, I got full signal. I am contemplating buying another DSL modem with a repeater so I can get rid of my Actiontec modem. I just don’t know which DSL modem to get. I am very ignorant when it comes to DSL technology. I don’t know if all DSL modems are the same or if there are different standards. My current modem will have to do for now.

Another gripe I have is portforwarding. Portforwarding using Actiontec’s modem is just plain confusing. Advanced setup of the router gives you firewalling options. It turns out that if you turn on firewalling options, port-forwarding doesn’t work. Truth be told, you don’t need firewalling on because your inside network is still protected by NAT. So … LEAVE THE FIREWALL OFF … BUT LEAVE NAT ON. I’m still having security problems with the modem. People can still see the web interface and telnet from the internet. How do I block that? I don’t know. I will have to look further into it. But for now, it is not a huge security issue.
