Hello, I’m New Here

twitter

What is this place? It seems familiar. It looks like a blog, but not. Kinda resembles an abandoned warehouse. Oh yes! … it’s my blog! I’ve been away too long, but sadly, I cannot stay. You see, there is this thing called Twitter. You might have heard of it.

… instead of trying to be clever and try to write something that fills up more than a few lines, I can be a smartass over Twitter. I don’t need to watch my language or my grammar or care about what I post. Not that I did any of that here anyway. I honestly can’t be bothered to form anything more than 140 characters, which is what Twitter limits me to. So yes, I know I have a blog. No, I won’t post here as often. If I can’t fit a single thought into 140 characters, then I might post here. My blogging comes in spurts and this is one of those lulls. Except this time I have an excuse. If there is a need to get in touch with me, you can find me at Twitter. If you wanted to get in touch with me through my blog, you probably would have signed up on Twitter anyway.

Until next time.

ribbed.us for sale

Stimator

For sale, this website, only $8,784. Well, no, not really. But check out Stimator, a pretty slick tool to place value on your website. I wouldn’t put any stock on the value it gives though.

lol hax0rd?

You eated my cookie?

One of my hosted domains got hacked over the week while I was in Las Vegas. It appears that instead of doing the regular defacement, the hacker not only left the site alone, it left spam pages in the domain. The only tell was my account using upwards of 1TB over a couple days. The lesson for the day is … when generating a password, use a strong one! If you use a password manager like KeePassX or LastPass, you can generate secure random passwords.

tweet ‘hello world’;

I hate writing. I have a blog. These are the facts. I do have a lot of thoughts though, so micro-blogging using Twitter might be the best thing and will let me send thoughts out into the cloud wherever I am using Twittelator on the iPhone. Check out my page on Twitter as well.

mmmm, Wordpress 2.5

mmmm mmm good. I have upgraded to Wordpress 2.5-RC1 and so far, I am loving it. The upgrade was painless … overwrite all the old Wordpress files. Yeah, you heard me, I didn’t make a backup. I’m a real man. All the plugins, all of which were updated to their latest versions, all worked. The design is refreshing, neat and everything was where you expect them to be. I’m loving the new upload and custom dimensions on pictures. Now to actually use this thing outside of first impressions.

The only feature that didn’t work for me was the automatic upgrade of plugins. Wordpress wouldn’t take my FTP details. I blame gremlins.

On another note, Happy Easter or whatever you celebrate to excuse yourself from work. Here’s a bunny to celebrate …

Google Site Search

I just discovered Google Custom Search Engine … and I think it is perfect for my gallery site.

The results of the search are very customizable. For example, instead of having everything in the domain searched, you can limit searches to within pages or via text-matching. Configuring custom search to only search “ribbed.us/*zen*” for example will only return results from my gallery site. The results can now also be put into an iframe so that you can wrap the results with the theme of your site. There is also an Ajax option which shows results in an overlay above your page.

Other features include collaboration with other users to refine the custom search … isn’t this Google’s job? :) , a business edition which includes ad-free results, custom branding, etc., and integration with your Adsense account.

Yet another great service from Google.

Actual customization to my search results inc when I have more time to fool around with it.
